Fossil Hunting in Yorkshire
The Yorkshire coast is the second most popular area in the UK for fossil hunting. The same Jurassic fossils, famously found along Dorset’s heritage coastline can be found in the area around Raithwaite. Some of the most commercialised fossil areas are Whitby, Port Mulgrave, and Robin Hoods Bay, but even in spite of this, there are still lots of interesting fossils to be found. Reptile remains are frequently being found here and it is also well known for its Jurassic plant remains, where they have previously been found in outstanding condition. Also of interest is the Cretaceous location of Speeton.
Whitby is a very popular location for fossil hunting but sometimes difficult to access due to tide conditions. The cliffs around Whitby are a rich source of fossils and yield many ammonites, reptiles and shells but you have to watch out for the tide.
Whitby Jet was undoubtedly one of the earliest gemstones used to create artefacts and items of jewellery and has a cultural heritage that extends back to early tool making man. It is the fossilized remains of a tree from the Jurassic period and is only found along a seven and a half mile stretch of the North Yorkshire coastline centered around Whitby near to Raithwaite Hall.
Guided expeditions are available and take about three hours and having expert guidance greatly increases your chances of a good find.
